Franklin County has many features, including The Mohawk Trail, the country's oldest scenic route, the historic village of Old Deerfield, Poet's Seat Tower, the Deerfield River, as well as the Connecticut River. Four season recreation is available throughout the area. A couple of examples are skiing at Berkshire East Ski Resort and whitewater rafting at Crabapple Whitewater, both in the western part of Franklin County.

There is also the Five-College area which includes the University of Massachusetts, Hampshire College and Amherst College, all in Amherst, with Smith College in Northampton, and Mt Holyoke College in South Hadley.
